Friend, did you know that it is biblical to live for pleasure? In fact, we are commanded to live for pleasure! We are to be "Christian hedonists," as John Piper states in his book Desiring God.

It seems that some people in the Christian world are not happy until they are miserable— but we're not doomed to this type of existence. The biblical principles in today's lesson might just change your entire outlook on life, as they have mine.

I recently searched for "sexual addiction" on the Internet to see what solutions the "experts" offer. Most of it is a joyless list of things to do in order to change your behavior.

For instance: when hit with temptation, visualize a policeman running up to you with a big red stop sign and handcuffs. Picture an emotionally charged moment, as the death of a parent or the birth of a child, to create an emotional pull away from the temptation.

Or place a rubber band on your wrist and snap it hard every time you are tempted. This associates temptation with pain, supposedly causing you to avoid the temptation in the future.

How sad and lifeless, how ineffective are the cures of the world! What about the heart? Jesus said lust is a heart problem (Matthew 15:18); no snap of the wrist or thoughts of policeman will change my heart.

Only Jesus can motivate my heart with such love that I can't possibly think of going back to pornography or adultery. Christ delights the soul and stirs the affections—it'spleasaurable to live in Him!

Would I prefer a cop with a red stop sign and handcuffs, or a Savior who loves my heart? It's not a difficult choice!

We are called to live for pleasure in God!

It is a bad world, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret.

They have found a joy that is a thousand times better than any pleasure of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not.

They are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people are the Christians—and I am one of them. Saint Cyprian (200-258)

(Saint Cyprian)(200-258)

Friend, this is our calling: to find joy in Christ, which is a thousand times better than any sinful pleasure. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I spent so long following the "pleasures of sin" in sexual immorality, when there was Someone "a thousand times better" waiting for me.

The ongoing experience of a relationship with Jesus Christ keeps me from wanting to return to my life of sin. I can't get enough of Jesus, who longs to fill me with all the fullness of God!

In this lesson, we will examine the sheer pleasure available in God. If you open your heart to God, you'll live in pleasure for the rest of your life and throughout all eternity.

Live while you live, the Epicure would say,

And seize the pleasures of the present day;

要及时行乐;

Live while you live, the sacred preacher cries,

And give to God each moment as it flies;

Lord, in my view let both united be;

主啊,在我看来,两者要合一;

I live in pleasure when I live to thee. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751)

The above verses state that there are eternal pleasures at the right hand of God, and that Jesus Christ is at the right hand of God.

The message is clear: eternal pleasure is in Jesus Christ! Sin's pleasures last only for a season, but with Jesus Christ, the pleasure never ends!

1 Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

Question 11

问题11

These verses make it clear that "delight of soul" awaits all who eat what is good. Are you eating what is good (God's Word)? Are you delighting in the Lord, Friend?

I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10

Question 13

问题13

Why is he rejoicing?

Remember Adam and Eve who, after their sin, were naked and ashamed? God came and clothed them with a sacrifice.

God provides all of His children with the garments of salvation—that is, with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This brings us pleasure, and causes us to rejoice.

To stand by the shadows of a friendly tree with the wind tugging at your coattail and the heavens hailing your heart, to gaze and glory and to give oneself again to God, what more could a man ask?

When we look at the Song of Songs, we see the joy we're supposed to find in Jesus Christ. That's the model we have to go by - not one of drudgery, but pleasure, joy and anticipation. Mary Ann Mayo, Marriage Partnership,Vol. 7, no. 3.

Nothing will supply the needs, and satisfy the desires of a soul, but water out of this rock (Jesus Christ), this fountain opened.

The pleasures of sense are puddle-water; spiritual delights are rock-water, so pure, so clear, so refreshing-rivers of pleasure. Matthew Henry

21 Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.

22Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.

23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent

24 and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,

25 then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.

26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God. Job 22:21-26

We understand that Job was getting the wrong advice, because he had not sinned. But his friend was surely giving good advice for us, wasn't he?

There are four requirements which must be met in order to delight in God. What are they? I'll write the first one:

Verse21:Submit to God

Question 18

问题18

According to the passage above, what needs to be done in order to truly delight in God? Please restate it in your own words:

Friend, there is exquisite joy and pleasure to be found in Jesus Christ. This must be experienced to be understood, because words fall far short of the reality. How wonderful to trade the temporary "pleasures of sin" for an eternity of pleasure with Christ!

With Him is fullness of joy, overflowing pleasure, and ongoing delight. Will you seek your pleasure in Jesus Christ? Once you taste the joy found in Him, you won't want to go back to the temporary pleasures of pornography and impurity.

4 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation. 5Let the saints be joyful in glory; Let them sing aloud on their beds.Psalm 149:4-5

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?

"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.

It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

 Yes是    No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是   No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是   No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是   No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
