Friend, have you ever wondered about God's will for your life? Today we'll explore this topic and consider the following questions:
·What is the will of God for our lives?
·How do we find it?
·How do we live it?
·What does God’s will have to do with sexual bondage?
1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.
7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. 1 Thess. 4:1-8
3 神的旨意就是要你们成为圣洁,远避淫行;
Question 1
问题1
In this passage, Paul talks about avoiding sexual immorality, controlling our bodies, and living a holy life. But in verse 1, before he mentions all this, he provides a motive. What is this motive?
Question 2
In your own words, why do you think Paul provides this as a motive for holy living?
There are many good reasons why we should avoid sexual immorality. However, if we are Christians, our primary motivation for pursuing purity should be so that we might please the Lord.
Before we knew Jesus Christ, we lived to please ourselves in ever-increasing wickedness, but now we earnestly desire to please Him instead of ourselves.
A sincere desire to please Him will drive us on to resist the devil, forsake the pleasure of sexual immorality, and control our bodies in a way that is holy.
Question 3
问题3
Compare your past motives for wanting to break free of impurity with your present motives. How do your present motives differ from your past motives?
When we offer ourselves to pornography or sexual impurity, the process of enslavement increases.
We want more pictures; we continually seek for something new and different; we go from softcore to hardcore; we move from one sex partner to another. We always want more.
Course member Paul wrote, "My lust pulled me deeper and deeper into more risqué and perverted activities. After awhile, the women were not as exciting as before, and I found myself drifting into homosexual erotica.
This was something that would have repulsed me before I became entrapped in the cycle of ‘more and more.’"
Question 4
But when we present ourselves to the Lord and become slaves of Christ, we enter a path of increasing righteousness. What instruction does Paul give about this in verse 1 above?
Question 5
Verse 3 above tells us very clearly what God's will is. Please write out verse 3 here:
Question 6
As Christians, we must "learn something," according to verse 4. What is it?
To talk right
To get people to make decision for Christ
To control our own bodies
Question 7
Verse 5 describes those who live in "passionate lust." What term does he use for them?
Oversexed
Heathen
Paul is instructing Christians not to live like their pagan neighbors, who did not know God. The pagans lived their lives in lust, giving in to sexual perversion and immorality.
History records that pornography played a major role in the culture of Paul's day.
Pornographic "art" abounded. This was a culture alienated from God, a people who "worshipped" sex in all of its perversions.
Paul's description of these people as "those who do not know God" is significant; knowing God is the key ingredient which enables us to "escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires" (2 Pet. 1:4).
Question 8
According to verse 6, what will God do to people who live like this?
Overlook their sin
Punish them
Understand them
Question 9
How does the following verse reinforce this? "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral" (Hebrews 13:4)
Question 10
Verse 7 identifies the "calling" of the Christian. What is it?
Make converts
Obey God’s commandments
Live a holy life
Question 11
How are you doing with your calling?
Friend, as we seek to live a pure life in Christ "more and more," we'll have opportunities to encourage others toward a holy life. Some may listen and heed our warnings and instructions. Others will cling to sin and attempt to justify themselves.
At Setting Captives Free, we have heard many different excuses from people who will not forsake their sin. Sadly, some of these people even use overtly spiritual language in their rejection of the truth. Here is an example, from an email we received:
"When I was saved and regenerated by the Holy Ghost (as salvation precedes regeneration), God showed me that His grace, mercy and lovingkindness are there to forgive every sin I have ever committed and the sins I will continue to commit as a born-again, adopted, grace-bought child of God.
He does not expect perfection from me; nor does He demand (under this dispensation of grace) that I forsake all sin in order for Him to love me. His grace increases with my sin, and is magnified every time I fall.
No, I have not forsaken self-gratification and pornography, but yet remain convinced that I know God, am known by God, and loved unconditionally.
I will remain His child, and do not need you to tell me to forsake sin. God knows I am a human being dwelling in flesh, and is sympathetic to the frailties of my flesh."
Notice the mixture of truth and error in his message. Despite all his religious language, this person is unable to forsake his sin, and is hostile to encouragement and warnings to do so.

Question 13
"But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power." 1 Cor. 4:19-20
9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor. 6:9-11
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24
8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. 1 Thess. 4:8
What is God's will for our lives? That we should be sanctified, that we should avoid sexual immorality, and that we should learn how to control our bodies in a way that honors the Lord. Our motive for doing this is to live in a way that pleases the Lord. Indulging in sexual impurity is a sin that, if not repented, will bring punishment from the Lord.
If anyone rejects this teaching, they are rejecting God. If we continue in these sins, it follows that we do not know God.
No amount of "spiritual language" can fool God, who calls us to live a holy life and to be pure. God gives us His Holy Spirit to call us out of slavery to sin, to make us pure and to enable us to live holy lives.
Scripture warns us about presuming upon God's grace in any area of sexual immorality:
8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did - and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test the Lord, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 1 Cor. 10:8-9
Friend, all of us at The Way of Purity course have, in the past, lived in some form of sexual immorality. During my bondage to pornography, I rebelled against God and presumed upon His grace by not forsaking my sins. God was patient with me, and granted me repentance in His time.
There is grace for all who turn from their sin and turn to Christ; and grace enables us to live a holy life now, regardless of where we have been. Grace doesn't just forgive the penalty of our sins, while leaving us under the power of sin.
Instead, it forgives and enables; it pardons and empowers. And it does so "more and more" as we grow in grace.

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.
What does "feasting" mean?"
Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.
It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth. This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
