John Piper once asked, "How do you magnify a fountain? You drink of it, and you drink only of it. This shows that the fountain is enjoyable and satisfying" (excerpt from audio tape "Preaching as Worship" from Desiring God.)
Yesterday, we studied and thought through the subject of motivation and how honoring the Lord must be our motive in order to gain freedom from impurity. Today, we will study how God is a "fountain of living waters" and we magnify and glorify Him when we learn to drink exclusively from Him.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
9The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
11"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
" The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.
" He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
"I have no husband,"
she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he" Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?
" They came out of the town and made their way toward him. John 4:7-30
13 耶稣回答说,“凡喝这水的,还要再渴;
In the above story, Jesus Christ spoke to a woman about two kinds of water:
1."This water," which would not satisfy and would not quench spiritual thirst. The woman would have to keep coming back again and again to get more of "this water."
2."The water I give" which would quench thirst eternally.
Then Jesus brought up the fact that the woman had had multiple relationships (five husbands and a current live-in, for a total of six relationships).
Obviously, she was finding no permanent satisfaction in these relationships, so she had to keep going back to find a new love, each time hoping that this time would be the last. In bringing up her "unquenchable thirst" for different relationships, Jesus revealed to her that she would never be truly satisfied until she began "drinking" from the water He would give her.

Jesus offered this woman living water. He said that if she drank it she would not be thirsty anymore; in other words, she would be satisfied, and not desire one relationship after another. Here is hope for us!
This is the solution to enjoying freedom from pornography, adultery, or any sexual sin. If you discover how to receive this "living water," and how to drink it, you will not be thirsty any more; instead, you'll be free from sinful cravings and slavery to the flesh.
The rest of this course is designed to help you receive and drink the Living Water.

Course member Simon writes, "Before, I was trying to quit mainly on my own strength, without replacing my thirst with the living water Christ supplies.
Now, I believe I can leave it all behind, because Jesus is really helping me. By drinking the living water Jesus gives, a satisfying, fulfilling water, I believe I can be free. The difference this time is the living water.
Without that, I couldn't quit. With it, I can't but help quitting."

Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
3 Give ear and come to me;
hear me, that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,my faithful love promised to David. Isaiah 55:1-3
Pornography, in its initial allurement, promises to quench our thirst. It promises satisfaction.
And honestly, it does satisfy——but only for a short time.
Soon we discover that we are "thirsty" again and, as the years go by, we find that we are never genuinely satisfied.
This is because sin never purely satisfies! It depletes us, not fulfills us.
I recall going from soft-core pornography magazines to X-rated videos, to cybersex with video cams.
I thought that if I could just see that perfect picture, or have that perfect sexual experience, my life would be full and satisfied.
This is the nature of sin. It takes us farther and farther and, though it promises to satisfy, it never truly does. So we keep coming back to it over and over again.
Question 11
问题11
Verse 2 above asks an important question: "Why spend money on what does not satisfy?"Have you spent money (or time) on that which does not satisfy? How does this relate to our involvement with sexual impurity?
This Isaiah passage is an invitation to the thirsty. Play along with me as we question the author of these verses. He says,
"Come, all you who are thirsty."
"Alright, I am thirsty, I will come. But where do I come to quench my thirst?"
"Come to the waters."
"Yes, that makes sense; if I am thirsty I should come to the waters, but where are the waters?"
"Ah, excellent question. 'Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live.'"
Friend, the water is in the Word of God. Drinking comes by listening. The Bible is our source of true refreshment.

Question 14
问题14
Next, provide your thoughts on this quote: "None but God can satisfy the longings of an immortal soul; that as the heart was made for Him, so He only can fill it." — Richard Chenevix Trench: Notes on the Parables. Prodigal Son Osbeck, Kenneth W., 101 More Hymn Stories, (Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications) 1997.
Earlier, we read the story of the woman at the well, who had been "drinking" from the wrong water. She was filling herself with one relationship after another and was obviously not satisfied. She was spending herself on what did not satisfy.
But Jesus offered her living water, which would satisfy her thirst forever. In the passage above, we are admonished to stop spending our time, energy and money on what will never satisfy us, and to drink the water that brings delight, joy and life to our souls. Do you see what we have been missing while involved in pornography and sexual impurity?
Question 15
问题15
How does the following verse relate to what we are studying? "Death and destruction are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man." (Proverbs 27:20)
Friend, I was trapped in pornography for 15 long years; my "eyes were never satisfied."
I continued to want excitement, love, acceptance, beauty, and all the other things that pornography offers. But at the end of those 15 years, I found that I had been drinking from a putrid, impure source of water, and it defiled me and made me unclean.
Since January of 1999, I have been drinking the clean, refreshing, satisfying,
life-giving, thirst-quenching water of Jesus Christ.
Today's teaching is foundational to overcoming impurity. Switch water sources! Pornography, adultery, homosexuality, etc. will never satisfy us, ever.
The pornography industry makes its billions on customer dissatisfaction, and if we stay trapped there we'll always have a continual lust for more. It's like salt water, giving more thirst than satisfaction.
Question 16
问题16
How does the following verse fit with today's teaching? "Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more." — Ephesians 4:19
Question 17
问题17
Write your thoughts on this verse: "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns [Note: cisterns are designed for water storage] that cannot hold water." — Jeremiah 2:13
Notice that God describes Himself as the "Spring of living water." He alone is the Source of our life, refreshment, joy and nourishment.
He is ever fresh and new, like a spring, and to "drink" of God is to receive life and be satisfied! Turning to pornography or sinful relationships is like trying to get water from a jar with holes in it.
Question 18
问题18
Read the following quote from the famous preacher Charles Spurgeon and record your comments about it:
"Men are in a restless pursuit after satisfaction in earthly things. They will exhaust themselves in the deceitful delights of sin, and, finding them all to be vanity and emptiness, they will become very perplexed and disappointed.
But they will continue their fruitless search. Though wearied, they still stagger forward under the influence of spiritual madness, and though there is no result to be reached except that of everlasting disappointment, yet they press forward.
They have no forethought for their eternal state; the present hour absorbs them. They turn to another and another of earth's broken cisterns, hoping to find water where not a drop was ever discovered yet."
Course member Paul wrote, "Madness! What a perfect description of my relentless pursuit that the next image will be the one that will satisfy. As the hours slip away and my eyes grow heavy with sleep, I cannot stop. It's a never-ending cycle. What madness, indeed!"
I want to add one final thought about this story, and show how it relates to our involvement with pornography and sexual impurity. Read the following verses from John 4, the passage we studied earlier:
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him. John 4:28-30
Question 19
问题19
After speaking with Jesus, the woman at the well went back into town. What did she do with her water jar?
Question 20
问题20
Earlier, we saw that Jesus Christ compared the water in that well to what?
The woman at the well left her water jar behind, which could mean that...
Scripture does not specifically say why the woman left her water jar with Jesus. Obviously, she still needed to drink physical water, even after her encounter with Christ.
Jesus offered her "living water" which would quench the thirst of her soul once and for all. As we learn how to drink the living water that only Jesus can give, we can leave our old "water jar" behind.
Question 21
问题21
Read this quote from Arthur Pink and give your comments:
She left her water pot because she had now found a well of 'living water.' She had come to the well for literal water and that was what her mind was set on. But now that she had obtained salvation, she did not think any more about her water pot.
It is always this way. Once our souls truly perceive Christ, once we know Him and receive Him as our personal Savior, we turn away from what we used to think about. Her mind was now fixed on Christ, and she had no thought of well, water, or water pot."
Granted, even after we come to Christ and learn to drink of His living water, there can be a time when we must learn how to leave the other "water behind" and it is certainly not always an instantaneous exchange of water, like the woman at the well did.
We are not saying that it always has to happen in this manner, but what we are saying is that as we drink of Christ's living water we are able to leave behind the sinful water.
Oh, how I remember the day in my pastor's office when I was challenged to leave behind the filthy waters of pornography and begin drinking of the living water.
I'll share more about this experience as we progress through the course, but I can tell you that I never want to go back to drinking that "sewer water" again. My heart's desire now is to see you drinking the living water, Friend—the water that satisfies forever.

Note: from this lesson on, instead of using the term "masturbation," we will use the biblical term "gratifying the lusts of the flesh," "self-gratification," or similar terms.
This helps to keep the language biblical, and also removes an oft-used excuse "the word ‘masturbation’ is not in the Bible; therefore it must be acceptable." For a fuller treatment and explanation of this subject, please read two excellent articles on this subject below.

Truths to consider for today:
You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. Psalm 90:8
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.' Then you will defile your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, 'Away with you!'" Isaiah 30:21,22
...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" Phil. 1:6
To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation. What does "feasting" mean?
"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.
It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth. This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc.
This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.
Have you been feasting on God's word?
Yes是 No 否
If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?
These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No 否
Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?
Yes是 No否
If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
