Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.Colossians 3:1-10

When I was involved in pornography and immorality, my heart was set on impure things. I would walk around during the day with my heart racing, my hands sweating, my mind dwelling on pornographic images—just waiting to get to the hotel where I could indulge my flesh and appease my sinful appetite.

Today, we'll study how the heart and mind affect our actions.

The Scripture passage above talks about the heart (verse 1), the mind (verse 2), and the actions (verses 5-10), and shows how they affect each other. The heart affects the mind, which in turn affects the actions. Let's look at each:

The heart. The heart loves and feels excitement. It longs, yearns, and lusts. The heart of someone in bondage loves to sin and feels excitement while sinning.

It longs, yearns, and lusts after sin. In contrast, the heart of one who is set free loves God and feels excitement in righteousness. That heart longs, yearns and earnestly desires the holiness of God.

The above passage instructs us to "set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God." In other words, we are to set our hearts on loving Christ. Involve your heart with Jesus Christ; become excited about Christ. Long to be with Him, yearn for intimacy with Him, lust after a closer walk with Him. Let the cry of the beloved be yours: "Take me away with you—let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers" (Song of Solomon 1:4).

The heart that is set on Christ is the heart that is free from sin. It embraces and clings to Him, refusing to let go:

Scarcely had I passed them when I found the one my heart loves.

I held him and would not let him go

till I had brought him to my mother's house, to the room of the one who conceived me.Song of Solomon 3:4

Question 1

问题1

What does your heart love right now, Friend?

Question 2

问题2

List some practical ways that you will begin to set your heart on things above.

The mind. The mind obviously refers to our thoughts. A mind that is in sin continually thinks sinful thoughts. Pornographic images consumed my mind while I was awake and my dreams while I was asleep.

Those thoughts interrupted my work, my recreation, my family time, and all other areas of life. Romans 1:28describes this condition: "Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done."

Colossians 3:2 tells us to "set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." When I was involved in sexual sin, I was so earthly minded, I was no heavenly good.

But we are told to set our minds on Christ—a shift that won't be easy, given our long immersion in sinful thoughts.

Now we are to think heavenly thoughts—thoughts about Christ and God, thoughts about eternity and heaven.

We are to discern whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy (in other words, Christ!) and we are to think on these things (Phil. 4:8).

The reason that we are to do this is found in Colossians 3:3:"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." On the cross, Jesus died for us, but we also died in Him.

Our old sinful nature hung on that tree with Christ. My old heart that loved sin died 2,000 years ago. My mind that was consumed with sinful images died and was buried in Christ's tomb.

Question 3

问题3

Notice that verse 2 does not tell us "stop thinking about sinful things" but rather "set your minds on things above." Why is this so?

The actions. What we do is related to what we love and think about.

Colossians 3:5 tells us that we are to put to death whatever belongs to our flesh, and lists "sexual immorality" as the first thing to crucify. Friends, here is where the Christian life turns violent, and where murder of our pet sins is encouraged.

We are to put to death sexual immorality and to crucify our lusts; this is a spiritual act of violence that requires a battle plan and spiritual weapons. Radical action is required if we are to be free from the power of sin.

So chop up the cable that has been seducing you; burn all the magazines the devil has used as bait; take the TV out of your hotel room and deposit it at the front desk. Cut off your Internet access; rip up your video store card, and refuse to take any cash or credit cards with you in case you are tempted by a favorite strip joint.

Next, set up fences for yourself to keep you from going back to these sins. This may be embarrassing to you, but unless we are willing to be embarrassed, we will never be free.

We are to not only crucify sexual immorality, but also all "impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." Everything must go.

Just as the children of Israel were told to stone Achan, his family, his sheep and cattle, and everything connected with him (Joshua 7), so we are to do violence to the entire realm of everything sinful.

We are not only to destroy sexual immorality, impurity, evil desires, etc., but we are to also rid our lives of anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips (Col. 3:8).

Question 4

Read verse 5 above. What does it call sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires?

Friend, sexual immorality, lust and all other forms of self-pleasing are idolatry. Idolatry is the worship of false gods. Did you know you were worshipping false gods when you were giving in to evil desires? When I was viewing pornography, I was kneeling down to a demonic god (1 Cor. 10:19-20) and worshipping at the shrine of the devil.

When I was gratifying the flesh, I adored myself and was living to please myself, which is self-idolatry. I did not know this at the time, but the devil was deriving worship from me through pornography and self-gratification.

No wonder the next sentence in Colossians 3 says: "Because of these, the wrath of God is coming." God will destroy all idolaters. This may be your last chance to repent of your idolatry before the wrath of God destroys you! We must destroy sin in our lives before we are destroyed.

Question 5

问题5

How does Exodus 20:4-5 fit with today's teaching? "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God..."

Today we have seen how the heart, the mind, and the actions are all tied together. We've been given specific instructions about each one: set our hearts on things above; set our minds on things above; and put to death all sinful actions.

This teaching is a summary of the Christian life—we must set our hearts toward loving God, dwell on thoughts of Christ, and destroy all sin in our lives.

Friend, I know people who are off-balance in these three areas. One person wants to focus only on his heart, as he believes love for God is the only thing required to walk in victory. He may be very much into emotionalism, praise songs, and worshipping with his eyes closed, etc.—while ignoring the teaching about the mind and actions.

There are others who are intellectuals, who know all the correct doctrine, but have no passion for Christ or for the destruction of sin in their lives. Still others focus all their efforts on stopping sinful behavior—but where is their love for God?

Question 6

问题6

Think for a moment about what would happen if any one of these three things were missing in your life.

What could happen if you did not set your heart on things above, yet you tried to do the other two things? Or if you didn't set your mind on things above, or if you didn't put to death sexual immorality? Share your thoughts here:

Thoughts to consider today:

No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.Psalm 25:3

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

which God will bring about in his own time - God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.1 Timothy 6:11-16

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?

"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.

It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

 Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
