Today, we're going to do something a little bit different. We'll work our way through a single chapter of the Bible.

This will be a little more interactive than some of the other lessons. We are about to drink from the living water!

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Romans 6:1,2

Question 1

问题1

What is the central truth taught in the above verse, Friend?

Question 2

问题2

Romans 6:6 states, "For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin." If we are "dead to sin," when did we die to it?

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, we too may live a new life.Romans 6:3-4

Question 3

There is a reason why we died to sin, were buried with Christ, and have risen from the dead with him? That reason is stated at the end of verse 4. What is it?

Question 4

问题4

What application does this have for those of us who were previously involved in pornography and sexual sin?

Course member Walter wrote, "It shows that the old man (the old sinner, Walter) was crucified with Jesus and, therefore, as a new creation, is resurrected with Christ and joined with him by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

I am free from the bondage of sin and its power, and can now live a life of purity and holiness in him."

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. Romans 6:5

Question 5

This verse gives us hope! But it's a conditional hope. According to this verse, upon what should we base our assurance of eternal life?

Friend, some people are quick to point out that we are to trust in the righteousness of Christ alone for salvation, not in our own overcoming of sin (or lack thereof). But theologians draw a distinction between imputed righteousness (which Christ grants to us freely when we're born again)

and imparted righteousness (which is the righteousness that plays out in our daily lives).

If Christ has imputed righteousness to you, your life will evidence imparted righteousness—and the presence of imparted righteousness proves that you've received imputed righteousness.

This might sound like an esoteric distinction, but it's relevant to our struggle. Those who are in bondage to sin, but profess salvation, often cling to imputed righteousness, saying, "We must not look to ourselves for any assurance of salvation, but only to Christ."

This is dangerous, for some people live as unbelievers, gratifying their lust, but presume that Christ has given them imputed righteousness. They don't understand that imputed and imparted righteousness always go together.

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:6-7

Question 6

问题6

What was crucified with Christ, and why?

Walter wrote, "My old man, the old me, the self/flesh was crucified with Christ, that we would no longer be slaves to sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. Romans 6:8

Question 7

问题7

What hope does Paul express in this verse?

Question 8

问题8

According to the verses we've just read, if we continue in slavery to pornography, or any other sin, should we have assurance of eternal life in Christ?

Question 9

问题9

Do you have the hope of living with Jesus Christ throughout eternity? If you do, upon what is your hope based?

For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:10, 11

Question 10

问题10

Verse 9 states that death no longer has mastery over Christ. Since we are united with Christ, what does this mean for us?

Question 11

问题11

What does it mean to count ourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus?

Question 12

问题12

Can a dead person sin? How will this teaching help us in times of temptation?

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.Romans 6:12

Question 13

问题13

We are not to let sin reign in our bodies. How is sin pictured?

Question 14

问题14

How does Colossians 1:13 relate to our study today? "For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Please write your thoughts here:

Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. Romans 6:13

Question 15

问题15

How can you offer each part of your body to the Lord—your head, heart, hands, etc.?

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.Romans 6:14

Question 16

问题16

How is being "under grace" different than being "under law?"

Question 17

问题17

Please tell us how you are progressing in the grace of God. What is going on in your life today? We really do pray for you!

Thoughts to consider today:

19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.

21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!

22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:19-23

21你们现今所看为羞耻的事,当日有什么果子呢?那些事的结局就是死;

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?"

Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

Yes是   No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

Yes是   No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
