How does salvation work? Who is it for? What does it look like in the everyday life of someone who was previously in bondage to sexual impurity?

These are the questions we'll answer today, Friend. You'll discover that God had a purpose for you... even in your slavery to sin!

To begin, read through the following verses and answer the questions below:

Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.

So He subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.

He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.Psalm 107: 10-16

As we walk through each verse individually, take note of the spiritual condition of the people described, and the reason things were so bad for them.

Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains

This verse states five things about the condition of these people:

in darkness

in deepest gloom

prisoners

suffering

in iron chains

There is no better description of the spiritual condition of someone enslaved to sexual sin! Consider each point:

They are in darkness. It is spiritually pitch black in the life of a person caught in the trap of immorality.

His or her lusts are continually stirred up by visual images that have been burned into his mind and the memories of past experiences; his or her mind is dark and lacks genuine spiritual light, which is wisdom and understanding.

They are in deepest gloom. This isn't true at the beginning, when a new relationship develops; or the middle, when the excitement of a new image floods their hearts and minds...

but as the bondage continues, the gloom increases. This is not "ordinary" gloom, this is "deepest gloom"—spiritual gloom, dread, fear, pessimism, hopelessness.

They are prisoners. They are captive to the "rush" of pornography, imprisoned by each impulse to look at porn. Or they're always looking for the next opportunity to engage in illicit sex.

They're not free to simply choose to stop, or to "just say no," any more than a prisoner is free to leave his prison any time he wants.

They are suffering. Sexual sin causes suffering. Examine anyone who has been enslaved to sexual impurity for a long period of time, and you will see suffering in their lives. I personally suffer for my years of involvement with pornography and adultery.

They are in iron chains. This is a reference to the strength of sinful habits. Sexual sin is an "iron chain"—too strong for man to break.

Question 1

Which number(s) above most accurately describes your past prison?

Karen wrote, "I can relate to all of them. My years of living in adultery blinded me to the truth about my situation, and left me depressed much of the time.

My life revolved around waiting for the phone to ring and arranging my schedule in order to have even a few minutes with that person. Even after I saw that the relationship was sinful and needed to end,

I did not know how to get out of it, and my sin caused me a good deal of emotional suffering."

Next, let's learn the reason these people were in such bad shape:

for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.

And look what God did next:

So He subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.

Notice 3 things that happened to these people because of their rebellion:

God subjected them to bitter labor. Were your impure sexual habits ever "bitter labor" to you? Mine sure were! The words "bitter labor" are the same used in Exodus 1 to refer to the Israelites' slavery. Sexual sin can reduce us to "slave labor."

They stumbled. Sexual sin will be your downfall, if you do not totally forsake it. They stumbled and fell. So did I.

There was no one to help them up. You probably know this already, but it's quite possible to drift so far into pornography that nobody can help you. Have you read Ted Bundy's testimony yet?

Question 2

Have you ever felt that you were in this very predicament? Explain:

Course member Paul wrote, "This Psalm’s description is right on target. I rebelled against God,and my reward was bitter addiction to the next image, the next sensuous picture or imagination. It would pull me in, even when I didn't want it.

I would ignore my family for my lust. I would go out in cold bitter rain to satisfy my wicked desires. Then I would suffer horrible guilt and shame and feel so trapped so alone."

Concentrate on the phrase "And there was no one to help them up." This is the condition to which God takes all whom he will eventually save.

He brings them to the point that they must cast themselves totally on His mercy. They cannot help themselves. Nobody else can help them. They are helpless and hopeless. And yet, what is impossible with man is possible with God!

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36)! Now see what happens next:

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men, for He breaks down the gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. Psalm 107:13-16

Friend, this is a prescription for freedom from pornography and immorality. Cry to the Lord. But, you say, "I have called to Him, and I'm still falling."

Keep crying out to Him! Have you ever noticed that when the Israelites first began calling to the Lord for help, their slavery actually increased?

God eventually delivered the Israelites by the blood of the lamb, and He can deliver you too. You must be like Jacob—wrestle with God in prayer until He blesses you with salvation from sexual sin.

God purposely takes us to the place where we cannot help ourselves, and where there is no one else to help us. In fact, later in this same chapter, we read that certain people were "at their wits' end" (vs. 27).

No motivational books or self-help guru could help them now—but they cried to the Lord, and He saved them! When you're at the end of your rope, you are at the beginning of hope.Call, call, call, and keep calling—He will answer, in His time.

Question 3

In the passage above, what five things does God do in response to people crying out to Him? Please list them here:

This passage tells us that when God saves someone, He destroys the work of the devil in their life. He frees them from the grip of the devil, removes oppression (though not all temptation), rescues from slavery to sin, and sets us free.

We must pray for ongoing help against backsliding, but the work of salvation is a thorough and ongoing deliverance from sin.

So, to answer the questions we asked at the beginning of this lesson:

How does salvation work? People rebel against God, God hands them over to slavery, they come to the end of their rope with nobody to help them, they cry to the Lord, and He saves them.

Who is it for? Salvation is for those who have rebelled, those who have gone against the teaching of God's Word, and those who have been in prison to sin.

What does it look like in the everyday life of someone who was trapped in sexual sin? We realize that we are powerless to resist our sinful impulses. We recognize that we are enslaved and imprisoned by it.

We hear that salvation is available through the cross, and we cry out. Often, God waits. We cry more, and louder.God hears, rescues, redeems, saves. We are no longer in bondage to sexual sin. The Son of God has set us free, and we are free indeed.

Question 4

Are you enslaved, in prison? Are you calling out to God? Or are you free indeed?

Course member Dennis writes, "Regarding pornography - calling and free. I really believe God has given me insight and freedom in this. Calling from prison, I know of His deliverance.

I believe He has shown me mercy. What a special thing to just know Him, and to receive from Him - to be filled and remain in Him, to have Him in all His fullness in all areas of my heart, mostly the ones of hurt, emptiness and discouragement.

It is a joy to truly know and experience and receive His forgiveness and completeness in full measure."

Course member Christoph writes, "I always knew that there was help, if I only could drop my pride and be accountable to a brother.

So, I continued suffering from the remorse of self-gratification until I found this website. I was given a good kick in the rear to confess to someone, which is all I needed. I always knew God would help me when I let go of my pride in this area."

Scripture to consider today:

12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.Romans 10:12-13

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?

"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.

It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.

It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

 Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
